Post Oral Implant Surgery

After my last extraction earlier this year I promised myself I would never put myself through the agony again. That was until my last dentist appointment when my dentist told me I must have two more extractions and two dental implants. Now I knew what was in store for me when it came to the extractions but the implants I was paniced about.
The day before my scheduled sugery I barely ate because I was so stressed out about the surgery, I slept for only 4 hours. I do not recommend this.
Thankfully my dentist is amazing, located in Yorkville downtown Toronto. Arriving on Thursday I sat in the waiting room with my stomach in knots. Not having eaten a thing I was borderline passing out just from the thought of my surgery. The doctor walks out in the waiting room and asks me to following him to the back. I climb into my seat that I would occupy for the next few hours. The assistant walks in and tells me first we'll start with your extractions, and after the extractions we will begin your implants.
For someone that hasn't drank a full glass of milk in ... maybe 10 years, my teeth were like rod iron. The first tooth took about 5 minutes but the second took about 30 minutes. At this time he was more frustrated then me, at one moment he looked down at me and said "OK I need you to push with your head against my force". Excuse me I thought, I'm wide away with some local anesthesia and you want me to push against your force. HA.
The Doctor told me that I will not feel a thing, which was my primary concern. Following up to my surgery I had nightmares about him hitting my nerves, but to be 100% honest I really didn't feel much except the pressure, which at times could be a little painful.
Finally after 8 shots of anesthesia and two extractions it was time for my "fake" teeth. He began by disinfecting the infection I had in my bone. Then it was time for the most dreaded moment, the drilling in the bone. I asked him if I would feel the drilling in the bone? He told me no, which I must agree was true. I was surprised, having such a major oral surgery I felt really relaxed, that was until we were half way through the procedure and my drugs began wearing off. During the second drill I could feel the drill entering my bone and I let out a little whimper, immediately the doctor gave me a shot of more magic.
The entire procedure took about an hour and a half. It did not hurt at all, unless your squeamish about the pressure but honestly I'd take pressure over pain any day. After the surgery I was given a Toradol which didn't do anything for the pain I was about to feel once the drugs wore off.
Once I arrived home i took two Tylenol 3's which I hate taking as they ruin your stomach, but I didn't have much of a choice. Also my cheek swelled up so bad that it looked like I got into a fight with Tyson.
If your getting your teeth pulled please remember not to eat anything chunky, crunchy or HOT. Stick to soups and tea's. My first night at home I had some ice cream, creamy tomato soup and apple sauce. Trust me the last thing you want is for something to get lodged. Also because the anesthesia doesn't wear off until the next day don't eat anything you have to chew because you could chew off your tongue. During the night I had my fiance stay up while I slept as I grind my teeth. Try to get someone to keep an eye on you through the night. I am now on day two and I have absolutely no pain, I had some soup with egg in it which I don't think was a great idea as it got stuck in my teeth, and some rice pudding. Also make sure from the second day on that you rinse with some warm water and salt, this is a great disinfectant. Don't drink with a straw because this could cause dry socket, dry socket is when the blood clot gets dislodged and this is really painful, if your a smoker try to wait at least 5 hours. If you can don't smoke for at least 3 days, smoking slows down the healing time.
If you have any questions let me know.

Great that you've shared your story, hopefully it will help someone who has to go through this too!
